I joined Fidessa in July 2006 as an Implementation Consultant after completing a BEng Computer Science at Queen's University Belfast.
I knew I wanted a varied role in a customer facing environment to allow me to use my technical knowledge and experience to utilise technology for real business solutions, so was interested in consultancy. I have also always been interested in the financial markets due to the fast paced nature and variety of business areas available.
I was introduced to Fidessa, and the graduate Implementation Consultant position seemed perfect as it satisfied all my requirements. I was lucky to be able to join the company at the beginning of an exciting period of rapid grown and expansion, but also being a medium sized company you don't experience the feeling of insignificance that can occur with larger companies, and you are awarded real responsibilities from the start.
I joined a small group of other graduates from a range of business areas and embarked on a range of classroom educational courses, ranging from an introduction to financial markets and courses to improve our professional skills, to in-depth technical courses on the Fidessa product suite. To compliment these courses I also completed a range of practical activities and reading.
After almost 3 months I commenced my first customer site placement at a Global investment bank in Canary Wharf as part of a large team. I was given real projects and immediately felt part of the team. It was a steep learning curve but with the support of my colleagues, both on site and off, it was relatively easy to start putting theory into practice, as well as picking up new skills.
Not long after I was moved to my current site, another Global investment bank, this time as part of a much smaller team, consequently with much more responsibility. Straight away I was dealing with day to day support and development, as well as analysing business requirements. I became point of contact in the team for a major project to help rationalise trade settlement processing, and also ran the project to upgrade our London Stock Exchange connectivity software. I always feel like an integral part of the team, and the work is consistently varied and challenging.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Fidessa so far, and look forward to developing my career further. If you are looking for a varied, client facing role in a successful, growing company, with the chance of international travel, and the opportunity to develop more than just your technical skills, I would recommend a role as a Fidessa Consultant.
