Laura
I began working for Fidessa in July 2006 as a Graduate Implementation Consultant. This directly followed on from a four year Computer Science BSc degree, with a year in industry at the University of Kent Canterbury.
Since joining Fidessa I have become a technical expert in one area of the product FDA – a static data application used by the Fidessa trading system. I am now relied upon to provide technical solutions to varying and challenging issues during the implementation of project deliveries for third party customers.
My work experience was geared towards a project analyst/trainer role and I found that Fidessa had an extremely good reputation. Although not as well known as some much larger financial companies, I was amazed at the extent and scale to which the product was used (85% of tier-one global equity brokers use a Fidessa product).
Despite having no formal training in Finance, I found that after completing the initial interviews and being offered the job I was immediately sent on training courses to gain a good grounding of Fidessa and the Finance business world. This allowed me to quickly and efficiently become productive and a very useful member of staff at Fidessa.
Due to the consistently evolving nature of the software being released there is a great deal to learn, and the product set as a whole can initially be quite daunting, however during the training period I found that other members of staff were always approachable and willing to help out with any questions or queries I had. Where terminology was difficult to understand or vague, a good explanation was always given, using real life examples and allowing me to gain a greater business acumen.
Over the last year I been placed in situations where constraints have been tight and solutions expected immediately. This in turn has boosted my confidence as it has required me to schedule my own tasks and delegate work where appropriate, with little or no input from others. On a day to day basis my work has varied from investigating issues found, working on configuration customisations to fit a clients’ needs and dealing with directly with clients, all whilst progressing with my own development via training.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Fidessa so far, and look forward to developing my career further. If you are looking for a varied, client facing role in a successful, growing company, with the chance of international travel, and the opportunity to develop more than just your technical skills, I would recommend a role as a Fidessa Consultant.
From my perspective I believe that the company has a welcoming atmosphere and a good team ethos allowing people to learn and share knowledge with others. When an individual shows interest in a new technical area, options can always be discussed and where possible relevant business or technical courses can be provided. To help monitor a graduates progress (and make the first few months transition smooth and enjoyable!) a buddy / mentor is assigned to you. The mentors are experienced individuals from outside your team that will act as an unbiased listener offering advice and support.
